Week 5. - Representation of Gender.

Dominantruling, governing, or controlling; having or exerting authority or influence.
Subordinate - placed in or belonging to a lower order or rank.

Women are looked at as being Subordinate to Males, who would be known as dominant.

Professional. Domesticated.
Strong. Weak.
Rational. Emotional.
Competitive. Co-Operative.
Independent. Communal.
Aggressive. Passive.
Ruthless. Sensitive.
Ambitious. Supportive.

Weeks 3 & 4 - Camera & Sound.

Camera Shots, Angles, Movements, Composition;

High Angle - Looking Down on Action.
Low Angle - Looking Up at Action.
Birds Eye View - Looking straight down on action.
Cantid Angle - Offset, to the side.
Long Shot - Top to toe shot.
Close Up - Facial Shot.
Pull focus - Blurring one thing to focus on something else.
Aerial Focus - High shots from the sky.
Medium Close Up - Shoulders Up.
Medium Shot - Waist up.
Establishing Shot.
Point of View.
Extreme Close Up.
Over the Shoulder Shot.
Two Shot - Two people.
Deep Focus - Different Depths in all focus.
Shallow Focus - Focused on a few things, background blurred.

Pan- Movement left to right or right to left.
Tilt - Up and Down.
Track/ Dolly - On a track for smooth movement.
Crane/ Mechanical Shot - High Sweeping Movement.
Whip Pan - Fast Pan Shot.

Steadicam - Support System/ Harness.
Zoom/ Reverse Zoom - In then out.
Hand Held - Literally in Hand.

Rule of Thirds.
Eyeline Match - Character positioned to preserve spacial continuity. - Established by shots and editing.
180 Degree Rule.



Sound;

Almost 50% of meaning in a film and tv is made up from sound. -- Music can anchor meaning, and dialoge is important in developing a character.

Diegetic Sound: Sounds that emerge from sources within the frame, the character can ear it.

Sound Perspective: Related to whether or not the sound we experience as an audience is from the perspective of a particular character or not. - Emphasizing certain Sounds.
Synchronus Sounds - Sounds which are matched with what is viewed.
Asynchronus Sounds - Sounds which are not matched with what is being viewed.
Ambient Sounds - Common things like water, wind, traffic. -- Provides: Audio Continuity, non unatural silence, reinforces the mood.

Non - Diegetic Sound: Sounds that come from outside the frame that the character can not hear.

Soundtrack - theme tune - strings, orchestral, rythmic, precussion.
Incidental Sound - Often "background" music that adds atmosphere to the action.
Sound Bridge - Smooths the transitions of two different scenes.



Silence: Can only be done in editing stages.

Mise En Scene - Week 2.

TV Drama Conventions.

Binary Oppositions.
Sub Genres.
Iconography.

Binary oppositions are conflicts between the main characters in television dramas, these are usually just people that "get along" because they have to.

Sub Genres of Tv dramas are; Crime Drama, Medical Drama, Sci-Fi Drama, Costume Drama, Action Drama, Comedy Drama, and Political Drama. Annimations could also be included but most of the time aren't.

Iconography. "Image Writing"
In a medical Drama you expect to see blood, Stethoscopes, and blood packs.
In a Crime Drama you maybe see Murder, Guns, Blood, Bullets, a Police Station and such.

Some Vocabulary:

Connotation: The associated or secondary meaning of a word or expression in addition to its explicit or primary meaning

Denotation: a word that names or signifies something specific: “Wind” is the denotation for air in natural motion. “Poodle” is the denotation for a certain breed of dog.

What a tv drama is: a tv drama is a television show that is scripted and fictional. Examples are life on mars, casualty, and House.
